How did we ever live without AC?

Heat Wave

I don’t know where you live (well, some of you I do), but here in the Philadelphia region this summer has been pretty brutal. Though I haven’t really had to deal with the extreme heat too much because of the graces of modern conveniences (read: air conditioning at home and the office), the temperatures have been pretty extreme. Officially, Philly has seen 5 heat waves so far, and is approaching the 6th. And it isn’t even August yet!

Groundhog

Groundhogs are cute. They’re furry little things that waddle around burrowing to live and to eat. They mostly eat wild grasses and other vegetation. But when they start invading your back yard, burrowing huge holes in your garden, and eating your lettuce, they’re not so cute any longer.

Bad Customer ServiceCustomer service used to be something we could look to for help. It used to be something we could rely on when we went to a restaurant, or needed computer help with a program or operating system, or even our bank. There was a time that I remember when you would call customer service and they were truly a service to customers. “The customer is always right,” used to be the motto. I’ve come to the gruesome realization today that customer service has met an untimely death. May she rest in peace.

Congress takes vacation while the unemployed are abandoned

It’s amazing that Congress can just take their week-long July 4 holiday while the unemployed sector of the country is in need of continued assistance. Today, unemployment claims are up, home sales are plunging, and manufacturing growth slows to a crawl. Congress was asked to extend unemployment benefits for another six months, yet they decided to sit on it for a week while they recess for the holiday. Without this extension, the current 1.3 million people who are without jobs and without benefits could climb to 3.3 million by the end of the month.
