Happy Life

There are times in our lives when we reach a state of happiness – that state where we look at our lives, and though not perfect, we can at least say we’re happy. I was thinking about this the other day, and started taking stock of what makes a happy life, when Hubby and I came strolling out of the grocery store bumping into each other through the doorway like an old Three Stooges short, then laughing, and one of the employees of said grocery store (as she was entering) said, “You guys are always happy and laughing together!” Our response: Life’s just too short to be taken too seriously.

But on the ride home with our groceries, I started thinking about it; and I’d like to share some of my thoughts about life. So pull up a chair and top off your glass of wine, or whatever makes you smile, and enjoy. These are just my thoughts.

Life is definitely too short to be taken too seriously

This is different than not taking life seriously. We’re here for such a short time, and we just don’t know how short it is until it’s too late. No matter how hard we try, we will never be able to cross a bridge before we come to it. Getting agita over something never helps the situation, and won’t solve the problem (I believe it was Mother Theresa who looked at “problems” as “challenges”). To be able to laugh in the midst of stress – to find something humorous in the mundane and even normal problems – is a great way to relieve that stress (as well as acupuncture, but that’s another blog post). Even Oscar Wilde was able to find a sense of humor on his death bed, when his last words were, “Either that wallpaper goes, or I do.” And for crying out loud, stop taking yourself so seriously! Learn to laugh at yourself, and allow yourself to find others’ humour in you. That way, when you do something really stupid, the world isn’t laughing at you, they’re laughing with you.

Enjoy the Music

I know we all have certain types of music we like to listen to, but there’s a world of music out there that most of us never get to hear, experience, and possibly enjoy! Yes, some of the music out there is quite insipid, but even the insipid music has a joy to it that we should all experience and enjoy. Everything from Classical, to Rock, to (yes) Country, Blue Grass, Folk, New Age, and World Music (music from other countries to which we never would have thought of listening). The key is to open your mind to what is out there. It exists for a reason. Give it a try. You might find out that you like something that others are shaking their heads at, saying, “WTF?” Don’t be afraid to dance to the music in your head!

Never Forget Being a Child

Have you ever seen the wonder in an infant’s eyes when they see something for the first time? Never lose that! An infant looks at his toes and thinks it’s that best thing since sliced bread – and then looks at sliced bread like it the best thing since toes! We live in cities and villages with historical sites (there’s something historical everywhere!) or zoos, or game preserves, or formal gardens, or state parks, and never see them because we live in the area! Go see them! Act like a tourist; like someone who’s never been there before (even if you’ve seen it 75 times!) and take pictures with your camera or cell phone and act the fool while doing it! And post it to Facebook or Twitter or Instagram! Who cares who’s watching! I went to Disney World for the first time with my family when I was an adult, and the first day entering into the park, we were so excited (me, Hubby, my oldest brother, my sister-in-law…), held hands, and skipped up to the entrance squealing with glee like children! (Note: It embarrasses the hell out of the teenagers you’re with, but it’s always well worth it!)

Love the Person You Are

We all have something about our bodies we don’t like. It’s natural. But they pale in the light of the things we’ve been given. If you’re unhappy with something about your body, change it. If you can’t change it, then embrace it with the difference of life that makes you who you are. Plain and simple. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes and colours. That’s nature. But love who you are, because it’s the only you you’ll ever have, and there’s a reason it was given to you, even if you don’t realize it right now.

Know That Your Life Has Meaning

We all have a purpose in life, whether you know it or not. It might be as President of the United States, or it might be to simply introduce two people to each other. But the most important thing is that we don’t have to know what that meaning is in order for our lives to have meaning. Like sunshine, it just happens and doesn’t require anything from us. It happens. Just know that it’s so.

There’s so much unhappiness in the world. War, famine, natural disasters, life under a dictatorship regime… Every day I turn on the news I see sorrow and angst and know that this is not about what life is supposed to be. But we are given what we have been given in life, and we are not given more than what we can withstand. To give up is not an option. Let us embrace whatever we’ve been given, and live life to the fullest as we were meant to be.

Life is too short to be taken too seriously.
